How much does it cost to install a solar powered roof on a small house?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Im just thinking about saving big time in the future.

It depends a lot about what you are doing with the electricity. If you store it in batteries that will add up a lot. I would say a small house it would cost about $40,000.00 Not all roofs are good for solar panels and it also depends on the climate, if you are where it snows you would be better off using wind turbines because you would always have snow on the panels stopping them from working.

Are plug in hybrid vehicles planning to include a solar panel for their roof?

Monday, April 19th, 2010

If a solar panel could be carried in the trunk of a vehicle and was placed on the roof once we arrived at our sunny 20-40 mile destination and we stayed there for several hours or a complete work day, it seems it could be locked in place to avoid theft and make at least a partial charge for the drive home. If this is reasonable, what would be the minimum kw panel needed to avoid having to use any fuel?

One is. Aptera is making an EV and plug-in hybrid which will have a solar panel on the roof.

Also the ZAP-X EV is supposed to have nano solar cells in its windows.

And the ZAP Xebra Xero has a solar panel on top.

And you can modify current hybrids to add a solar panel to the roof.

But I don’t think the major auto companies (i.e. Chevy Volt) are planning on putting solar panels on their plug-ins.

Solar Roof Tiles – Solar Power Without the Solar Look

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

http://www.EnergyBrainiac.com – Solar Roof Tiles – Solar Power Without the Solar Look
If you’re like a lot of people these days who are considering the installation of solar power in their homes, you may not know the difference between solar roof tiles and a solar panels. And the distinction is important because the one thing that prevents many folks from enjoying the benefits of solar power is that they are afraid of ruining the appearance of their home.

So what is the difference between a home equipped with solar panels vs. one with solar roof tiles? It is not hard to notice. Solar panels are those large, cumbersome units that often are perched atop the roof of a house, making it look to some people like something out of a science fiction movie.

To install the panels properly, it is often necessary for additional roof framing or roof penetration. And if yours is the first house on the block to install solar panels, you might have to endure lots of funny looks and derogatory comments from the neighbors.

On the other hand, solar roof tiles are much less obtrusive than solar panels. As the name implies, solar roof tiles are incorporated into your existing roof, whether it consists of asphalt shingles or most other common types. One shingle weighs about 2.5 pounds per square foot, so they are generally easy to work with when it comes to installation.

They tend to be a dark bluish-gray in color, so they blend in easily with most existing roof types. And the best thing is that they provide for a seamless look, so the untrained eye will not be able to tell the difference.

But perhaps the best thing about solar roof tiles is how they help you save on your energy bill. One tile puts out about 50 to 200 watts of energy, which is about as much as a small window fan. While this may not sound like much, if you incorporate the tiles into your entire roof, you should be able to supply enough energy for your entire house.

And if you are fortunate enough to live in a sunny state such as California, Florida, or Arizona, you may even produce more energy than you need. You can then sell this excess energy back to the local power company, further reducing your energy costs.

So not only do solar tiles look great, they’ll help you do what’s really important: save money. To find out more about solar tiles visit solar roof shingles.

How much would it cost to place solar panels on 1,800 square feet of roof space?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I live in Southern California. About 1100 square feet of my home’s roof space faces toward south. Another 700 square feet are from a covered porch facing the same direction. Where can I get a good estimate of the cost of installing and maintaining a solar panel system on my roof? I also want to know if there are any government rebates/incentives offered.

Once your indoor lighting has been installed you will be able to use the lighting both night and day. During the day you may not need it except on cloudy days. During the night you should have enough energy from the solar power to last you through the night. It is becoming the latest in lighting barns on farms as well because there is no wiring needed to get lighting out to the barn. just the cheapest solar panels and thats all.

How do you install solar panels on a slate roof?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

How do you install solar panels on a slate roof?

Thanks,
Helpmeplease.

Just like a tile or other stone roof, one or more tiles is generally removed, and a standoff is attached through the sheathing to the rafter below. The standoff is then flashed just like a vent. Racks are then mounted on these standoffs.

You can see examples of mounting systems on http://www.unirac.com/

Solar hot water can be heavy, and you would want to be sure of the strength of the underlying roof, especially if there is a tank on the roof.

Solar electric is light.

It’s probably worth it to get a pro to do the install on this kind of roof, as it’s not as forgiving as, say, asphalt shingle.

Solar panels on roof. can you help me decide?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

If Ed Begley is around maybe he can help also! :-)
My home is directly southwest facing and needs a completely new roof (composite shingles)

I would like to place solar panels across the entire front of the roof. approximately 900 square feet in the front of the house.

1. Do I reroof underneath the panels first or can I leave the old shingles on underneat.

2. Will this be adequate to take me off the power grid in my 1800 square foot home and outside lighting in garden aea?
I have a washer, dryer, fridge, dishwasher and electric stove, and air conditioner to run.

thank you for all your help. I need to make this decision before having the new roof put on.

Just rough guessing here. a 115 watt solar panel I have on my home is right at 3 foot wide and 5 foot long. That is 15 sq. feet. So you will get about 7.6 watts per sq foot. Times 900 = about 6,900 watts in solar power on your roof. If you get 5 hours of peak sun a day you will produce about 41.4 kWh a day.

That is just over twice what I use in an 1700 sq foot home.

Yes you will need to replace your roof because it could leak and you would have to remove all the solar from your roof to fix it in a few years.

So being you are replaceing your roof why not save a little money and install Solar roofing shingles. Should be about the same or less being you are going to reroof and add solar. And no one would know you had solar unless you told them.
